U.C.A. - N.C.A. - E.C.A. - W.C.A. Staff Members

Cheerleading at the University of Richmond is a non-scholarship athletic activity. However, we do recognize cheerleaders as student-athletes, who are afforded benefits such as professional training, free tutors, varsity letter awards and access to an outstanding sports medicine staff.

The University of Richmond athletic department has as its top priority our cheerleader's academic well-being and safety. All of our coaches are safety certified, and while many college squads practice as many as five and six days per week, we prefer to recognize the importance of other aspects of personal development associated with the college experience and limit our practice sessions to three days per week.

Cheerleaders are athletes, entertainers and public relation ambassadors for the University of Richmond. Our practice sessions not only include stunt and cheer chant drills so important to support our football and basketball teams, but also consist of conditioning, strength, gymnastic and dance.

Proof of our strong tradition in cheerleading includes a national championship 1997 UCA (small co-ed division), NCA National Collegiate finalist, past squad members cheering for professional football teams, and coaching at the college, high school and all-star level.

Cheering at the University of Richmond includes attending the University ranked #1 small liberal arts university in the south, and living on the most beautiful campus according to the Princeton Review.

Tryouts are held in the spring and fall in order to give incoming freshmen the opportunity to make the squad. You will be judged on all cheerleading skills including cheer and change execution, stunt execution, personality projection, gymnastic and athletic skills such as jumps, kicks, etc. and past performance for returning cheerleaders.

Combine all that with our new affiliation in the Atlantic 10 Conference in 2001, plus our women's soccer and football teams appearances in the 2000 NCAA playoffs, and it's easy to see that the University of Richmond is an exciting place to be. But don't just take our word for it. We hope that you will be able to visit our beautiful campus and attend a football or basketball game to see our cheerleaders in action. "GO SPIDERS!"
